This diagnostic testing is used to identify a student’s current skill level so we can place them appropriately in the right summer course level.
It’s also important to understand that assigned grade level and skill level are not the same thing. A student’s skill level is based on performance on the diagnostic test, not only their current grade placement, so students receive instruction at the level where they’ll grow most.

Session 1 ONLY: June 1 – June 19
Mondays 4:00 pm – 4:55 pm
Wednesdays 4:00 pm – 4:55 pm
This course is designed to strengthen students’ reading and learning readiness, building confidence and competence as they transition to the higher expectations of grade 3. The goal is to prepare students not just to “practice reading,” but to develop the foundational skills and habits they will need to meet the academic demands of third grade and beyond.
A major focus of the course is ensuring that students develop grade-level reading proficiency. Third-grade reading proficiency is a critical “pivot point” for future success: students who are not reading at grade level by third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school. In addition, low-income students who read poorly in third grade are roughly six times more likely to drop out of high school than proficient readers. Because of these strong links between early reading success and later outcomes, this course emphasizes targeted support and measurable progress.
To support students effectively, the course includes engaging, scaffolded learning activities designed to promote growth over time. These activities help students build key reading skills—such as decoding, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension—while also reinforcing the learning routines expected in grade 3.
The course is taught by a current 2nd-grade teacher, bringing a strong understanding of students’ needs at this stage. The instructor knows the strategies that work best for helping young readers grow quickly and can provide instruction that feels familiar, encouraging, and developmentally appropriate.
